What happens when I think about how the note C functions within Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian.

There are 49 functions of the note C when thinking about Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian.

3+2 alone tell you that the note C is

3rd of Phrygian. (you add 1 to the 2)

It adds up to 5 also known as Mixolydian
